How to Become a Therapy Team

  1. Read the team information packet, the core performance standards, and the scope of service policy to see if you think this would be a good fit for you and your animal.
  2. Call our phone line (210-614-6734) or e-mail animal@therapyanimalssa.org to ask questions and have an application e-mailed to you.
  3. If you are not already a member of Therapy Animals of San Antonio, you must join and pay your membership dues before or when sending your application and fee for the team training class.
  4. E-mail your application and pay your $25.00 class fee or mail your application with a check for the $25.00 class fee.
  5. Attend a one day, eight hour training course without your animal. The dates for the year are on our calendar. You are reponsible for training your animal. We have some suggestions for training classes.
  6. Decide if you want your team registration to be with our local organization - Therapy Animals of San Antonio, or with the national organization - Pet Partners®. The differences between the two are detailed in the team information packet and will be explained at the training course.
  7. Attend a scheduled one hour pre-evaluation screening session with your animal. The dates for the year are on our calendar.
  8. Have your veterinarian complete a health-screening exam on your animal.
  9. Pass a scheduled therapy team evaluation with your animal. The cost is $30.00. The dates for the year are on our calendar. The evaluation is explained in the team information packet. You may purchase a shirt for yourself and/or a vest for your dog to wear to your Therapy Animals activities.
  10. Visit at least two facilities with an experienced therapy team. Your animal does not go with you.
  11. Select a facility on our waiting list to visit regularly.  We require a minimum of ten visits each year with a two year commitment.
  12. Begin visiting and submit visit reports on-line after each visit.
